Are we planning for a retirement date… or a retirement life?
The retirement conversation has changed dramatically over the past few years.
Today, terms like FIRE, Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE have entered everyday vocabulary. Many professionals I meet are working towards a date when they can step away from work, rather than a number that can sustainably support the life they envision.
It's an understandable shift. After all, financial freedom is about having choices.
But in our enthusiasm to retire early, one must be careful not to overlook what it takes to stay retired comfortably.
Retirement planning has never really been about choosing between living well today and saving for tomorrow. It's about doing both.
The objective isn't simply to reach a retirement date.
It's to reach that date with the confidence that your wealth can sustain your aspirations, keep pace with inflation, withstand market cycles and provide peace of mind throughout retirement.
Perhaps the question we should ask isn't:
"How early can I retire?"
Instead, it should be
"Am I building the financial resilience to live the life I want—today and for the next 30 or 40 years?"
